Customer reviews

works flawlessly 5 by .. L. Sterman (St. Louis, MO USA)
I upgraded from a Sansa Express to the Fuze 8 GB. It sounds good, the operating system is fast and does everything it should. The Fuze seems like it is built well and has a solid feel to it. I put in an 8 GB microsd card and now have 16 GB of storage, enough for thousands of tracks. This is a great buy.

Good product, great bargain 4 by .. Reid (Austin, TX)
The Good:

-you can use drag and drop, no crappy itunes needed. Write speed is decent, not great

-very small. nice and thin, but big enough to feel sturdy in your hand.

-pretty good audio quality. if you are using sensitive headphones (IEMs), there is no noise whatsoever (unlike all ipods) and detail is pretty good straight from headphone jack

-good power output. they can drive earbuds easily and most headphones to a pretty loud level without any noticeable distortion. however, to drive headphones, you will be getting close to maxing-out the volume. still sounds good though.

-interface is very simple, much like the ipod.

-scroll wheel actually scrolls. personally, I prefer this to a touch scroll wheel or touch screen any day.

-micro SD slot. 8gb now, and with a memory expansion you can well surpass the memory of a nano

-battery life is good, my estimate would be around 20 hours. Ive probably used it for 16 hours straight and it had some juice left.

-great price. compared to the competition, its a steal, but its not perfect. for some it may be worth investing in a better player, but for the average listener its a great buy.

The Bad:

-file support isn't great, some of my music had to be converted. Also, its ID3 tag reading isn't great either.

-the headphone jack does not work with all headphones. for the earbuds it comes with it works fine, but others dont fit right, resulting in a loud clicking noise instead of music. I have westone um1s that have this problem. I like the player enough though that i used a bit of electrical tape to prevent the plug from going too far into the jack, which was the problem. now it works perfectly, 100% of the time.

-the screen is not as pretty as more expensive players, and file support isnt great, so if youre really wanting to watch videos, its probably not going to be the best choice. Also,

-scratches like crazy. if you care about this, you need to put a screen protector on right when you get it. seriously. dont wait. 2 seconds in a pocket will give it small scratches.

-quality control. this is my second player, the first one just died after a couple hours. just buy from amazon and have them pay for shipping back if it dies, as a couple other users have apparently had the same problem.

summary: if you care about sound quality, ease of use, functionality, and/or price, and not really about scratching or watching videos, I recommend it highly. In its price range it won't be beat, but it might be worth going for the new Zen if you don't want the downsides of this bargain player.

Good MP3 player 4 by .. S. Griner (Houston, TX)
The Fuze 8GB MP3 player is my first MP3 player. I bought it to use while travelling, so I can have my favorite music from my CD collection with me.

- The sound quality of the player is good for MP3 and for FM radio

- The menu is easy to use, once you get used to the round scroll wheel

- The capacity of this player, even without the optional MicroSD, is good.

However

- The little foam cover fell off one of the included earphones almost immediately

- There is no STOP button, (only pause.) According to web sites, this is by design.

If, like me, you don't have prior experience with an MP3 player, and specifically copying data from CD to MP3, the included Quick Start guide is little help. The more detailed manual on the Sansa website is better, but you'll still need to figure out quite a bit on your own.

Would be great except for a few issues 3 by .. P. Worley (Pacific Northwest)
The price, capacity and design of the Fuze 8GB are great, however I have had some issues with my Fuze since picking it up a couple months ago:

1) The screen is easily scratched: I have been carrying it in the front pocket of my jeans with nothing else, and the display screen has lots of little scratches on it (they showed up the first day even). Not at all scratch resistant, if you get one make sure you get a shield for the screen. Strangely enough the finish on the rest of the front of the Fuze is much more scratch resistant (though not completely so either).

2) Proprietary connector: The Fuze uses a proprietary connector to connect to your computer's USB port rather than a standard USB Mini-B plug. This means if you lose it you can't just use a standard cable, you'll have to buy a new proprietary cable you can't use anywhere else. Additionally if you want to use a wall adapter to charge your device you'll need to purchase another cable.

3) It takes too long to refresh: Each time you unplug it from your computer or plug in a MicroSD card, the Fuze goes through a process of "Refreshing your media", presumably scanning the internal and/or external memory for music. This takes about five minutes on mine, with a nearly full (7GB) internal memory and no external memory. Even if no changes are made to your music (i.e. you were just plugging it in to charge the battery), it will go through this process each time you unplug the device from your computer.

4) Playback issues: This may be an issue with my particular Fuze, but on occassion it will refuse to play particular tracks. After cycling the power it will then usually play the tracks fine.

5) Playlist problems: I have been unable to utilize playlists with much success. The Fuze recognizes standard M3U playlists, however accessing and scrolling through them on the Fuze is painfully slow (I just looked into one of my playlist, it took 15 seconds for the list to show up, and maybe 2/3 second to scroll down to each song off the bottom of the screen). Additionally, the tracks in the playlist show up with the artist's name in front, so for long artist names you can't see the song name at all, unless you wait for the name to (slowly) scroll to the right revaling the rest of the information.

6) Scrolling issues: In general, scrolling is pretty rapid (unless you're looking at a playlist). Unlike the iPod however, the speed is fixed; continuously scrolling through your music will not 'accelerate' the scroll speed after several seconds. I scrolled through my artists from A-Z, it took 39 complete rotations of the scroll wheel to reach the bottom, and again to go back, taking maybe 20 seconds. With a full 16 GB of music, or fewer songs each from more artists, this could easily double.

With the exception of the easily scratched screen and proprietary connector, I would think these issues could be resolved via a firmware update. Hopefully as the Fuze becomes more mature these issues will go away, as they mar an otherwise great device.

I'm loving this 5 by .. Susan (Pahrump, NV)
I've only had this one day and after I finally figured out how to change back the language from the French to English that I accidentally clicked on, and figured out how to adjust the volume by using the scroll wheel (I haven't had an mp3 player with a scroll wheel before) it's great. It's so small and light; I've been carrying it around on my hip (I ordered a case and belt click also). I wondered about the storage space, but also purchased a 4gb micro sdhc card which now gives me almost 12gb. I listen to podcasts and all I did was drag and drop them on the player and it was set to go; no playlists to set up! I do lots of walking and now I won't have to lug around my heavy mp3 player anymore; yeah!
